Three things that are probably already happening
The site got slower and nobody changed anything
Automated traffic reads every page, every image, all day. Your server answers all of it, because it cannot tell them apart from customers.
The login page gets attempts you did not make
Admin pages are found by scanning, not by guessing. Once a server answers the internet directly, it gets found.
Your server address is public and you never published it
DNS is public by design. Anyone can read where your website actually lives, with one public query.
None of this means someone is attacking you today. It means your server is answering the whole internet directly, which is the normal state for a website that was never put behind anything.

We keep checking after you are set up
Setting up once is not the same as staying protected. We run 6 checks on your website every ten minutes, and tell you the moment one of them changes.

- Whether the record that renews it silently disappeared
- Whether your domain still points at us, so traffic keeps flowing through
- Whether your real server still answers requests that skip the shield
Two of those catch failures that look like nothing is wrong. A missing renewal record breaks your site months later; a deleted CNAME record drops the shield while your website still loads fine.

Often, yes. If you can change your domain nameservers to Cloudflare, do that. It is free, it is the same network we put you on, and you will not need us.
Use Cloudflare directly when
- You control the nameservers for your domain.
- Moving every DNS record for the domain is something you are comfortable doing.
- Nobody else depends on the current DNS setup staying exactly as it is.
We are for the other case
- Your domain is managed by someone else, or nameservers are not yours to change.
- You want one website behind the shield, not the whole domain.
- You want to be told when the setup quietly breaks, months later.
One thing we do not claim: the firewall itself. Your website sits behind the same Cloudflare protection either way, at the same strength. We do not sell a stronger wall. We sell getting behind it with one DNS record, and knowing when that record stops working.

If I stop using you, does my website go down?
No. Point the DNS record back at your own server and you are exactly where you started. Every screen that has a website on it tells you that, rather than leaving it for you to find in the terms.
Does my traffic go through your servers?
No. Visitors go from Cloudflare straight to your own server. We are not in the path. We hold the settings and the check results, not your traffic.
I already use Cloudflare. What then?
Then you are already behind it, and we will tell you so rather than sell you something. The check above detects this case and stops instead of offering you a signup.
I do not manage my own DNS. Can I still do this?
You need someone who can add two DNS records for your domain. That is the whole requirement. Often it is whoever built the site, and the setup page names your DNS provider so you know who to ask.
Will it slow my website down?
Visitors reach Cloudflare instead of reaching your server directly, and Cloudflare is usually closer to them than you are. We have not measured this on real customer sites yet, so we are not going to put a number on it.
